IPL player gives positive drugs test
14/07/2008
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has confirmed a player from this season's Indian Premier League (IPL) has tested positive for a banned substance.
Mohammad Asif has been confirmed as the man at the centre of the controversy.
However, the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) is awaiting a 'B' sample and has begun the process of checking the paperwork associated with the player to determine if the rogue sample could be the result of a declared and legal prescription medicine.
Few details have emerged as yet, with the ICC confirming only that it is "aware of an adverse analytical finding" from within the IPL.
The ICC and its members, including the Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) who sanction and organise the IPL, have recently signed up to Wada's international code and introduced more stringent drug-testing methods.
And the ICC have said it expects the BCCI "to deal with the process in a timely and fair manner".
"The ICC is proud of its status as a Wada signatory and will be closely monitoring the situation to ensure the correct action is taken by the BCCI," a statement from the international governing body reads.
"The ICC retains a right of appeal if any penalty that may be imposed is inconsistent with the Wada code."
