Jack Simmons made ECB chairman

05/02/2008

Jack Simmons has been elected as the new chairman of cricket for the ECB.

The England and Wales Cricket Board announced today that the Lancashire chairman had been selected to the post after a ballot of the 18 first-class cricket counties and the MCC.

Simmons, 66, received 12 of the votes while Durham chairman Clive Leach received seven.

The position was vacated by Dennis Amiss who has since become the ECB's deputy chairman after Mike Soper quit.

Simmons played 450 first class matches for Lancashire and Tasmania during his 21-year playing career.

The right-hander, known as Flat Jack, scored over 9000 runs and took 1033 wickets.

He was also named Wisden cricketer of the year in 1985 and led Tasmania for six seasons including leading them into the Sheffield Shield competition from 1977-78.

He has been Lancashire chairman since 1998.ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18455630-ADNFCR
