Kumble announces retirement following Delhi draw
02/11/2008
Indian captain Anil Kumble has announced his retirement from Test cricket following India's draw with Australia in the third Test in Delhi.
Kumble has been nursing a finger injury which he sustained on the third day of the Test and needed 11 stitches.
The news about one of the Indian side's great players overshadowed the outcome of a tough game of Test cricket which ended in a draw.
India resumed the final day on 43-2, a lead of 79 but with no realistic opportunity to win the match.
Australia started brightly looking for early wickets and were rewarded with when Brett Lee bowled Rahul Dravid for 11 to leave the hosts on 53-3.
However, Sachin Tendulkar steadied the innings along with opener Gutam Gambhir. The pair adopted a cautious approach and the run rate dipped.
Gambhir had faced 107 balls for his 36 before Mitchell Johnson had him trapped lbw just before lunch.
India led by 135 going in to the interval and the afternoon session again saw them batting out the draw.
Johnson and Michael Clarke were bowling a testing line and length to Tendulkar and VVS Laxman (59 not out) and both players were hampered by having to curb their natural attacking instinct.
Tendulkar eventually edged Cameron White to Matthew Hayden at slip on 47 but Laxman and Sourav Ganguly (32 not out) were able to see India past the tea interval.
They declared on 208-5 and Australia batted out the final eight overs of the day without losing a wicket.
India lead the series 1-0 heading into the final Test in Nagpur where Mahendra Singh Dhoni is expected to take over from Kumble as captain.
Kumble retires from the Test arena with 619 wickets in 132 matches. He took ten wickets in a match on eight occasions and also contributed 2,506 runs during his Test career.
