Kumble takes 600th wicket

17/01/2008

India captain Anil Kumble has become only the third man ever to take 600 Test wickets after claiming the dismissal of Australia's Andrew Symonds.

The 37-year-old joins two other spinners - Australian Shane Warne and Sri Lankan Muttiah Muralitharan - in reaching the milestone.

Kumble achieved his feat when all-rounder Symonds became Australia's sixth wicket to fall on the second day of the third Test in Perth.

When on 66, and sharing a century partnership with wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist that had rescued Australia from a paltry 61-5, Symonds edged a Kumble delivery behind.

The ball ricocheted off stumpsman Mahendra Singh Dhoni and was caught at slip by Rahul Dravid, sparking wild celebrations among the Indians, who are looking to bounce back from defeats in the first two Tests of the series.

The wicket, and that of Symonds' partner Gilchrist (55), sparked another mini collapse among the home side, who went from 192-6 to 212 all out - Kumble taking his Test wicket total to 601 with the dismissal of last man out Shaun Tait.

Following their first-innings total of 330 all out, the tourists established a 118-run lead as they look to deny Australia a world-record 17th consecutive Test match victory.ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18430350-ADNFCR
