Mahmood helps Lancashire fight back against Yorkshire

31/05/2008

Sajid Mahmood claimed 4-61 to help Lancashire fight back on the first day of the Roses battle against Yorkshire.

The England pace man took two wickets in his first spell to restrict Yorkshire to 47-2 before captain Anthony McGrath came to the crease and made a spirited 45.

However, after lunch Mahmood was able to dismiss him when McGrath edged the ball to wicketkeeper Luke Sutton.

Yorkshire then took control of proceedings as Jacques Rudolph (66) and Gerard Brophy (59) helped the hosts on to 256 before Mahmood came back to claim the wicket of Brophy.

Spinner Gary Keedy also claimed two wickets as Yorkshire ended the first day on 306-7.

Elsewhere in the County Championship, 13 wickets fell on the first day in the match between Sussex and Durham at Hove.

Steve Harmison and his brother Ben Harmison took the majority of the wickets for Durham as they restricted the defending champions to 214 all-out.

Steve took 3-35 off 22 overs, while Ben claimed 4-43 from 13 overs. Opener Chris Nash top-scored with 75 for Sussex and debutant Rory Hamilton-Brown made a useful 62.

Despite Durham's success with the ball the match remains finely poised after Sussex took three quick wickets at the end of day one to leave the visitors on 10-3 overnight.

In the day's other division one match Surrey recovered from 112-4 to make 280-7 against Somerset at stumps thanks to Scott Newman who made 84 and James Benning scored 69.ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18618001-ADNFCR
