Mascarenhas signs up for Indian Premier League with Jaipur
11/03/2008
All-rounder Dimitri Mascarenhas has become the first England player to commit to the Indian Premier League (IPL) after signing with Jaipur.
The 30-year-old Hampshire star was snapped up by the north-western franchise as part of the latest round of auctions ahead of the competition's maiden year.
Regarded as something of a one-day specialist, Mascarenhas has ten caps in the shortened version of the game although he is yet to make his Test debut.
He played for England in the recent one-day series in New Zealand with mixed success - scoring a quick-fire 29 not out from 12 balls in his only innings of the tour, but failing to take a wicket in his 14 overs bowled as he conceded 93 runs.
Mascarenhas may miss the start of the domestic season with Hampshire as a result of his IPL contract, which is also set to affect the availability of captain Shane Warne.
The Australian spin legend has already signed a deal with Jaipur to skipper and coach the franchise.
And the Hampshire pair will be joined by South Africa captain Graeme Smith and Pakistan batsman Younis Khan in the Jaipur lineup, which is set to be referred to as the Rajasthan Royals for the Twenty20 IPL tournament.
