McCullum powers Kiwis to win
31/12/2007
Brendon McCullum smashed 80 off 28 balls to power New Zealand to a record-breaking one-day win against Bangladesh.
The Kiwis sealed the one-day series 3-0 after their ten-wicket win in Queenstown, with spinner Daniel Vettori taking 5-7 to dismiss the Tigers for just 93.
And thanks to McCullum's powerful batting, New Zealand reached the Bangladeshi total with 44 overs remaining, 31 balls faster than the previous record.
Captain Vettori had put the Tigers into bat after winning the toss and opener Junaid Siddique fell to Kyle Mills in the third over.
Tamim Iqbal and Mohammad Ashraful helped Bangladesh to 41 after 15 overs before Vettori devastated the lower order, removing Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mashrafe Mortaza and Farhad Reza.
The left-arm spinner's haul took him past the New Zealand one-day career record of 203 wickets previously held by Chris Harris.
And his five-for also made him the world's leading one-day wicket-taker in the calendar year with 43, ahead of India's Zaheer Khan, who grabbed 40.
McCallum's display remained the highlight however. His 50 off 19 balls broke his own New Zealand record of 20 balls - set against Canada in the World Cup this year - while narrowly falling short of the world record of 50 off 17 balls held by Sri Lankan master Sanath Janasuriya.
McCullum's score - in which he smashed nine fours and six sixes - was a world record 84.2 per cent of his team's total.
The previous record was held by West Indies batsman Desmond Haynes, whose 85 against New Zealand in Trinidad in 1985 comprised 72.7 per cent of his side's final total of 117.
