Middlesex defeat Lancashire in Twenty20 Cup
08/07/2008
Middlesex have beaten Lancashire by 12 runs in the Twenty20 Cup quarter-final at The Oval. Dawid Malan was the hero scoring a phenomenal 103 from 54 balls.
The game was being played at The Oval while Lords is being readied for Thursdays first test between England and South Africa, and initially it seemed like Lancashire were prepared to capitalise on Middlesex having to play their home game away from Lords.
All that changed when Malan came to the crease. The 20-year-old, who is enjoying a magnificent debut season at Middlesex, arrived with his side in a desperate situation with a score of 21-4.
Malan then hit ten fours and six sixes to give the home side a total of 176-7 from their allotted 20 overs.
The game was as good as up when Lancashire fell to 14-3, and although they made a fist of it, it always looked an unlikely total and they ended their 20 overs on 164-8
One positive for the visitors was the performance of Andrew Flintoff. He took figures of 3-17 with the ball, and hit 53 from 41 balls, which included five fours and three sixes, as Lancashire chased the total.
Flintoffs resistance fell when he was caught by Malan off a Steve Finn full toss.
Middlesex wrapped up the tie pretty quickly after that to secure their place in the last four.
