New Worcestershire pavilion to honour veteran Hick
10/09/2008
Worcestershire have announced they are to name their new redeveloped pavilion after long-serving player and former England international batsman Graeme Hick.
A new pavilion building will be constructed at New Road and will be titled the Graeme Hick Pavilion in honour of the 42-year-old, who has been with the county for 24 years - the whole of his professional career in England.
The Zimbabwe-born right-hander made 65 Test appearances and played in 120 one-day internationals for his adopted country, with an average of more than 30 in both disciplines.
The overhaul of New Road, which was hit by serious flooding last year, has the brand new pavilion building as its centrepiece - replacing the current members stand.
However, the architecture for the original pavilion - which was built in 1899 - will be retained and reconstructed on the site of the existing ladies pavilion "at some stage in the future".
The new £2 million pavilion project, which is due to be completed by late April or early may next year, is "a very contemporary design but retains the world famous views over the ground to the cathedral", the club confirmed.
It will also feature a frontage made entirely from glass in order to improve the views for those inside.
Another club favourite, 81-year-old former captain Tom Graveney, will also be honoured after Worcestershire officials confirmed the new members lounge would be named after him.
