New Zealand trounce sorry England to take 2-0 series lead
12/02/2008
England have lost the second one-day international against New Zealand by ten wickets after a poor fielding effort and another batting collapse.
Despite opener Alastair Cook top-scoring with 53 and double-figures efforts from Phil Mustard (13), Kevin Pietersen (29), Ravi Bopara (23) and Stuart Broad (23) - the rest of the batting lineup failed spectacularly.
Number three Ian Bell was out for a golden duck, while Owais Shah (0), Paul Collingwood (one), Graeme Swann (one), Ryan Sidebottom (two) and Jame Anderson (two not out) fared little better.
Rain had restricted England to an innings of just 36 overs but still the team failed to bat the distance after being bowled out with the first ball of the final over.
And New Zealand eased to victory in just over half the time, taking only 18.1 overs to reach their Duckworth-Lewis adjusted target of 165 without losing a wicket.
Opening batsman Brendon McCullum was dropped by wicketkeeper Mustard when yet to score and Shah fielding at slip gave McCullum's partner Jesse Ryder a life on eight.
And the pair made England pay as Ryder totalled 79 off just 62 balls while McCullum garnered a quick-fire 80 off 47 balls, which included eight fours and five sixes.
The tourists are now 2-0 down in the five-match series, and must win the remaining three matches to register a third consecutive one-day series victory.
