Notts sign Prince as overseas player
06/08/2008
Nottinghamshire have signed South African batsman Ashwell Prince as their overseas player for the rest of the season.
Prince will replace Australian David Hussey, who was released by the county due to increased commitments for his country.
Notts currently top both the County Championship and one-day Pro40 League and Prince says he is hopeful of securing some silverware during his time at Trent Bridge.
His current run of form should certainly enhance Notts' chances of attaining that goal. Prince scored 149 against England during the second Test at Headingley and is averaging 83 during all five first-class matches during the Proteas' tour this summer.
Prince said: "Notts are in contention for silverware and I'm confident that I can add some experience to the team at an important stage of the season.
"I know that I am joining a competitive team and I have kept my eye on the results ever since the interest was expressed."
Notts have tried to replace Hussey with a number of players since the Australian left. A deal for fellow Aussie Adam Voges fell through as he could not play the final six weeks of the season, while India batsman VVS Laxman's move was blocked by the Board of Control for Cricket in India.
Prince said he spoke to England bowler Stuart Broad about Notts and that the seamer encouraged him to join the club.
He added: "I spoke to Stuart Broad at Headingley long before the deal was concluded and he told me that the setup was good and that Trent Bridge is a great place to play cricket."
Prince will be available to play for Notts as he has been omitted from South Africa's one-day squad.
