Openers help England to consolation win
11/08/2008
England survived a flurry of afternoon wickets to win their dead-rubber Test match against South Africa by six wickets.
Kevin Pietersen's side had already lost the series but, after dominating much of the first four days at the Brit Oval, needed 197 to complete a much-needed win. They lose the four-Test series 2-1.
As usual England's openers seemed nervy at first, with Strauss being caught by Graeme Smith only for a no-ball to be called.
That could have placed the home side under pressure but instead it was South Africa's turn to struggle.
They failed to take a wicket in the morning session as England advanced to 109-0, Strauss playing an anchor role as Alastair Cook (67) struck 12 boundaries.
His departure shortly after lunch was followed soon afterwards by those of Strauss for 58 and a disappointing four from newly-promoted Ian Bell.
England seemed in control despite the subsequent loss of Pietersen for 13 with just 15 runs needed for victory.
Paul Harris was the pick of the bowling, taking 2-56, but it was a six off his bowling from Flintoff (11 not out) which ended the match with a flourish.
