Pattinson and Flintoff in for England
18/07/2008
Darren Pattinson and Andrew Flintoff are the new faces in England's XI for the second Test against South Africa.
Nottinghamshire seamer Pattinson comes in for the injured Ryan Sidebottom in an intriguing selection move by coach Peter Moores.
Flintoff will as expected make his first Test appearance for 18 months in place of dropped one-day captain Paul Collingwood at number seven.
But the real shock was the inclusion of Pattinson, who only began his first-class cricket career in January 2007.
The 29-year-old, who was born in Grimsby but grew up in Australia, made his breakthrough into the game when Victoria signed him on a one-year deal.
In April this year he moved to Nottinghamshire and has already earned 29 first-class wickets in six appearances for his county this summer.
He was originally called up to the England squad as cover for James Anderson, who was struggling with a back complaint, but when Sidebottom was ruled out with a similar injury Pattinson got the nod ahead of Chris Tremlett.
At Headingley today the Proteas, who have stuck with the same team that battled to a draw at Lord's, won the toss and opted to bowl first.
