Pietersen welcomes MCC 'switch-hit' ruling

18/06/2008

England batsman Kevin Pietersen believes the MCC's decision to allow him to continue using his controversial 'switch-hit' stroke is "good for the sport".

The South African-born middle-order star struck two spectacular sixes off the bowling of Scott Styris in the recent one-day international against New Zealand, reversing his stance and grip to that of a left-handed batsman.

His revolutionary technique came in for criticism from pundits and many traditionalists, who questioned whether it was within the spirit of the game.

But the MCC has since ruled that the stroke is legal, calling it "exciting" for the game of cricket.

Reacting to the ruling, Pietersen said he is "very pleased".

"I think it's the right one, not just for me or England but the game as a whole," he said.

"It's important that we as players are innovative and if this shot helps make cricket more exciting and entertaining for spectators then that has to be good for the sport.

"I don't agree with the argument that it is unfair on the bowlers. It's an extremely high-risk shot and there will be plenty of bowlers out there who will think that it gives them a great opportunity to get me out.

"But overall I am glad that MCC have recognised that cricket is always evolving and that this particular shot brings something special to the game.

"I have spent many hours in the nets working on it and I am pleased that all the hard work is not going to go to waste."

Pietersen is expected to lineup against the Black Caps again at Edgbaston later today, with England leading the one-day series 1-0 thanks to the 114-run victory at Chester-le-Street last week.ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18642787-ADNFCR
