Proteas peg Windies back
02/01/2008
South Africa made a good start to their quest for revenge against the West Indies, who were restricted to 240-8 by stumps on day one in Cape Town.
The Proteas lost the first Test against Chris Gayle's side last week and must win this and the final fixture of the three-match series to take their expected series win as a result.
After winning the toss Gayle hit a fluent 46 but his efforts were undermined by the dismissals of Daren Ganga for three and Runako Morton for 23, leaving the West Indies struggling on 83-3 at lunch.
Shivnarine Chanderpaul (64 not out) and Marlon Samuels (51) then dug in for a fine 106-run stand for the fourth wicket and the South African fielders looked bored and uninterested during the day's wicketless middle session.
Two quick wickets after the interval changed the tempo of the match, with Makhaya Ntini taking scalps in successive overs for the bright spot of his otherwise uninspired day.
Further slips followed with the score on 220 when Dinesh Ramdin (21) and Rawl Lewis (0) gave Dale Steyn a hat-trick opportunity.
Jerome Taylor may have seen off that danger but Steyn got him shortly afterwards with the final wicket of the day's play and the fifth of the session, the new ball doing much of the damage towards the end.
Steyn finished with 4-60 at stumps and will be looking to end Chanderpaul's typically dogged resistance early on the second morning.
