Rain forces delay to Twenty20 Cup match
09/07/2008
Heavy rain has forced the postponement of tonight's Twenty20 Cup match between Warwickshire and Kent.
The heavens opened for two hours at Edgbaston this evening, leaving organisers with no choice but to reschedule the match for tomorrow.
The delay is unfortunate for Kent, who have a county championship match against Yorkshire on Friday.
"It will be another huge challenge because we won't get back from Birmingham until the early hours of the morning," admitted coach Graham Ford.
"But a lot of this happens on the county circuit and we just have to respond to it.
"It's going to be tough for the boys but there is no point complaining about it. Let's just hope we can get a good game of cricket in on Thursday."
On tonight's waterlogged pitch Warwickshire director of cricket Ashley Giles commented: "I think you have to look after the spectators. They have been good for us in Twenty20. The competition has taken a bit of a battering in the last week and we need to look after the game.
"We have sold 6,000 tickets and for us we want to play in front of a crowd with a good atmosphere. A quarter-final with a few hundred people watching is no good for anyone."
Essex and Middlesex have already secured their place at Twenty20 Cup finals day at Southampton's Rose Bowl on July 26th.
The fourth quarter-final remains undetermined after the Yorkshire-Durham match was postponed following the fielding of an ineligible player by Yorkshire.
