Rain stops England one-day contest
18/08/2008
The first one-day international of Kevin Pietersen's reign as England captain was abandoned due to heavy rain in Edinburgh.
In an innings reduced to 44 overs Scotland recovered from 11-3 to make a total of 156-9, with Gavin Hamilton's 60 the pick of their innings.
Andrew Flintoff was the best of England's bowlers, with figures of 3-21 while Tim Bresnan also impressed with 2-34.
England's opening duo of Ian Bell and Matt Prior had just 10 runs on the board when the rain came, and play was never resumed at The Grange.
Afterwards, Pietersen revealed that in-form Owais Shah will bat at number three in the upcoming one-day internationals.
"Owais is going to bat at number three for the simple fact that I think he was wasted at number seven," Pietersen said.
"He's a high-scoring, quick-scoring cricket player who plays cricket shots to get boundaries.
"There's definitely a strong case for Owais getting a good opportunity to bat and play long innings for England.
"I want to give the guys a good run at it and concentrate on a specific role so when something happens and you need to change, at least I've identified the roles the players need to play and they can just slot in and slot out.
"It's not a case of doing one thing on one day and another thing on another day."
