Ryan Sidebottom delighted with best-ever wicket haul

23/03/2008

Ryan Sidebottom has revealed that his 7-47 in the first innings against New Zealand was his best-ever performance in all forms of cricket.

The Yorkshire seamer put England in control of the match with a devastating spell in the afternoon session of the second day of the deciding Test – taking five of his seven wickets during that time.

Sidebottom said it was pleasing to be able to help the side out when they were under pressure not to let the match slip away.

He said: "It's the best day's cricket of my career.

"It was pleasing because our backs were against the wall at one stage. We lost some quick wickets this morning, but this has put us in a great position so it's pleasing to do that."

England were facing the prospect of a first innings deficit when the Black Caps reached 91-1 at lunch but Sidebottom's spell turned the match on its head..

Sidebottom felt that he gained reward for bowling a consistent line and length

He explained: "Things can change quickly but if you keep putting the ball in good areas you've always got a chance."

In what has been a surprisingly low-scoring game Sidebottom feels England can put themselves in a wining position if they can post a challenging total on the third day.

He added: "It's another big day tomorrow - hopefully we can get another 250-300 runs."

England will resume with a lead of 176 with eight wickets remaining in their second innings.ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18519772-ADNFCR
