SA blow Windies away
12/01/2008
South Africa took seven wickets after tea to complete a series win over the West Indies on day three of the Durban Test.
The Proteas take the series 2-1 after coming back well from an unexpected defeat in Port Elizabeth, where they lost by 128 runs.
Having shown resolve in the second Test they blew away a Windies batting line-up lacking support from lynchpins Chris Gayle and Shivnarine Chanderpaul.
Shaun Pollock took four wickets in the first innings to help bowl the tourists out for 139 before Graeme Smith (147), Ashwell Prince (123 not out) and AB de Villiers (103 not out) pushed on to make 556-4 declared in reply.
Resuming on 23-0 this morning, West Indies started badly by slipping to 88-3.
But then a dogged 144-run fourth-wicket partnership between Dwayne Bravo (75) and Marlon Samuels (105) provided their best resistance of the Test, surviving the afternoon session intact.
Soon after tea Bravo's dismissal, trapped lbw by Dale Steyn, broke the stand and set in train the all-too-familiar collapse.
With Chanderpaul absent ill the end quickly followed and the Windies were bowled out for 317, Steyn cleaning up with the new ball to take 6-72 and nine wickets in the match.
The defeat by an innings and 100 runs was a fitting exit for Proteas legend Shaun Pollock, who announced his retirement yesterday.
He finishes his Test career with 421 wickets at 23.11, the highest tally by a South African, and a batting average of 32.31.
