Sehwag falls short of record while Dravid reaches milestone
29/03/2008
Virender Sehwag's hopes of troubling Brian Lara's highest ever Test score were ended by Makhaya Ntini in Chennai.
After setting a personal best of 319 the opener edged to Neil McKenzie at first slip, ending any aspirations of challenging Lara's 400 not out.
South Africa eventually bowled India out for 627, with the hosts taking an 87 run lead into tea on day four of the first Test.
Former captain Rahul Dravid became only the sixth batsman to score 10,000 runs in Test cricket passing the milestone on his way to 111 - the 25th century of his career.
South Africa were 109-1, with Harbhajan Singh claiming the wicket of skipper Graham Smith, as the day's play neared it's close.
Hamish Amla was poised ominously on 29 and will be looking to emulate his 159 in the first innings.
Earlier, Ntini had put in a sterling performance with the new ball to account for Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar in swift succession. He then had Dravid caught by Kallis in the slips to finish with figures of 3-128.
Dale Steyn then cleaned up the Indian tail taking four wickets, to end with 4-101.
