Selector Miller wants England to return to single captaincy

20/01/2008

Newly appointed national selector Geoff Miller says he would like England to return to using one captain at international level.

The England captaincy is currently split between Michael Vaughan, who is in charge for Test matches, and Paul Collingwood, who skippers the side during one-day internationals.

Miller claims he is happy with the arrangement as it is at the moment but wants to move back to having one captain for both forms of the game in the future.

He said: "Ideally I would like one man to captain both, without a shadow of a doubt, but the situation as it is with the two personnel that we have got I am quite happy with that."

Vaughan has retired from one-day internationals after failing to make a century in the limited overs format in 86 appearances, meaning a second captain is required.

The Yorkshireman is still considered a top Test player and captain of considerable skill so it is unlikely that he would be replaced for the sake of consistency.

One man who could be earmarked for the dual role that Miller envisions is all-rounder Andrew Flintoff.

The Lancastrian is currently recovering from another operation on his troublesome ankle and Miller is keen to have him firing on all cylinders when he returns.

Miller said: "It would be nice to get Andrew fit and he is on the right road to getting fit again.

"He is a vital part of our side in all forms of cricket and there are one or two others like that as well."

Flintoff hopes to make his return for England this summer when New Zealand begin their tour in May.ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18433652-ADNFCR
