04/08/2008

Middlesex have beaten Somerset by 43 runs in Division One of the Natwest Pro40 at Lord's.

Owais Shah, left out of the England's 13-man squad for the fourth Test against South Africa at The Oval on Thursday, scored an unbeaten 96 from 102 balls – including eight fours and one six.

He was ably supported by a quick-fire 50 off 25 balls from Tyron Henderson, including six boundaries and two sixes, which allowed the home side to post a total of 203-9 from their 40 overs.

Chris Willoughby was the pick of the Somerset bowlers, taking three wickets for just 26 runs, including the vital wickets of Ed Joyce and Eoin Morgan.

Somerset looked to be racing towards the total as Marcus Trescothick scored 40 off 35 balls, before he eventually fell to the bowling of Henderson.

After that, Shaun Udal and Murali Karthik tore into the Somerset attack, inspiring a a six-wicket collapse for just 31 runs as Somerset slumped to 103-7.

Udal took 3-21, and Karthik took 2-36 as Somerset were eventually all-out for 160.
