Sidebottom reinstated for Stanford Super Series
09/09/2008
The England selectors have rewarded 14 of the 15-man one-day squad for their comprehensive series victory over South Africa by giving them the chance to play in the money-spinning Stanford Super Series.
This means fast bowler Steve Harmison keeps his place, despite only returning to the fold for the most recent series, while fellow paceman Ryan Sidebottom is also picked.
The unlucky man to miss out is Tim Bresnan, although he will be promoted to the squad for the autumn trip to the Caribbean if Sidebottom - who missed the South Africa series through injury - fails to prove his fitness in time.
Kevin Pietersen's squad, who trounced the Proteas 4-0, is therefore a rather predictable one for the Super Series, with the same players making up the squad for the subsequent tour of India.
All-rounders Ravi Bopara and Luke Wright keep their places, as does wicketkeeper-batsman Matt Prior, who has impressed in recent matches.
Nottinghamshire duo Samit Patel and Graeme Swann also remain, as does Middlesex batsman Owais Shah and Test opener Alastair Cook, who has looked less than comfortable in the past while playing the shorter version of the game.
National selector Geoff Miller said: "The selectors would like to congratulate the team on an outstanding performance in beating such a talented one-day side as South Africa so comprehensively.
"It bodes extremely well for the tough challenges that lie ahead this winter and is reflected in our decision to retain the bulk of the squad from this summer's NatWest Series for both the Stanford Super Series and the tour of India."
The Twenty20 match in Antigua on November 1st offers the players the chance to earn £500,000 each with a victory, and a further £1 million will be split between the rest of the squad and the coaching staff - making it the richest single game in cricket history.
