Sidebottom steps in for Mascarenhas

15/06/2008

Seam bowler Ryan Sidebottom has been selected in the England XI for the first one-day international against New Zealand at the Riverside.

He replaces all-rounder Dimitri Mascarenhas, who was part of the team that beat the Black Caps in convincing fashion in Friday's Twenty20 international.

Mascarenhas bowled two wicketless overs at Old Trafford, giving away ten runs, and Sidebottom is expected to bolster the England attack - especially after his excellent form for the Test side during the earlier series.

The change is the only one from Friday's team, which means Ian Bell - who scored a superb 60 not out from 46 balls in the Twenty20 - will open the batting alongside Luke Wright.

Kevin Pietersen, who contributed an unbeaten 42, will come in at number three with Ravi Bopara, captain Paul Collingwood, Owais Shah and wicketkeeper-batsman Tim Ambrose to follow in the middle order.

In addition to Sidebottom, Graeme Swann, Stuart Broad and James Anderson will make up the bowling attack.

New Zealand will be without middle-order batsman Jacob Oram, who is still suffering from an injury, and the tourists have handed an ODI debut to promising youngster Tim Southee.

Gareth Hopkins will start as wicketkeeper so Brendon McCullum will play as a specialist batsmen at the top of the order.
