Sidebottom to miss warm-up matches with hip injury
17/08/2008
Ryan Sidebottom will miss the build-up to England's one-day series against South Africa.
The swing bowler has a hip injury and is out of tomorrow's warm-up game against Scotland, and Wednesday's Twenty20 clash with South Africa.
Pace bowler Chris Tremlett is also out with a heel problem. Yorkshire's Tim Bresnan has been added to the squad as cover.
Sidebottom missed two of England's four Tests against the Proteas due to niggling injuries.
But coach Peter Moores insists the Yorkshire bowler can cope with the demands of international cricket.
"He's done it for 14 months, so it's not something that's a flash in the pan," Moores said.
"He's gone away to have treatment and physical work to get himself ready to play again. We're hoping he comes back into the one-day series feeling refreshed and ready to go.
"Physically he's in a better shape than he was 12 months ago, but he has had a lot of workload and he's bowled a lot of overs in the Test matches," explained Moores.
"He's had a bit of groin pain and neck pain, which they are hopeful of getting cleared up so he is available for the next period to come."
Meanwhile, wicket-keeper Matt Prior is expected to get another chance to open the batting with Andrew Flintoff set to come in down the order.
Kevin Pietersen's reign as ODI skipper will start on Friday at Headingley Carnegie.
