Smith leads Proteas to victory
25/01/2008
South Africa have gone 2-0 up in the ODI series against West Indies after an 84-run win at Newlands.
After winning the toss and choosing to bat, the Proteas posted 255-9 with skipper Graeme Smith top-scoring with 86. JP Duminy hit 68 while AB de Villiers made 45, while Jerome Taylor was the pick of the Windies' bowlers taking 4-34.
The Windies never looked close to reaching their target and were skittled out with ten balls to spare. Shivnarine Chanderpaul was once again his side's leading run-scorer with 54, while Morne Morkel did the most damage taking 436.
The hosts were struggling on 18-2 after five overs with Taylor removing the out-of-form Herschelle Gibbs (5) and dangerman Jacques Kallis (7).
Smith and de Villiers put on 91 before the latter was trapped lbw by Darren Sammy. The captain then fell 14 runs short of his century after a loose shot which was caught by wicket-keeper Denesh Ramdin off the bowling of Marlon Samuels.
The Proteas failed to crank up the tempo in the final overs despite Duminy earlier hitting 68 off 81 balls.
West Indies, without Chris Gayle and Ramnaresh Sarwan, slumped to 69-4 in reply before Chanderpaul steadied the ship.
Sewnarine Chattergoon hit 34 but the rest of the side failed to deliver with Morkel taking the last wicket of Taylor (1) to seal victory.
