South Africa follow-on against England at Lords

Ashwell Prince scored a gutsy century for South Africa but couldn't prevent his side from following-on against England at Lords today.

The middle-order batsman held the South African innings together with his 101, but the visitors were all out for 247 in their first innings and are 13/0 in the second innings.

Monty Panesar claimed impressive figures of 4/74 as England continued to demoralise the South Africans, who spent the best part of two days in the field as England racked up 539/8 in their first innings.

South Africa started the day on 8/0 and desperately needed the opening pair of Graeme Smith and Neil McKenzie to get them off to a good start if they were to have any hopes of avoiding the follow-on.

But Smith fell for only eight when a James Anderson ball rose off a good length and came of the handle of the South African captain's bat and Ian Bell took and easy catch.

The Proteas then lost Hashim Amla and Jacques Kallis fall in quick succession. First Amla edged behind to Tim Ambrose off the bowling of Stuart Broad and then Ryan Sidebottom claimed the crucial wicket of Kallis, who edged behind to Andrew Strauss.

McKenzie battled hard for his 40 before he was bowled round his legs by Panesar after the ball turned sharply and crashed onto his stumps.

Prince and AB de Villers (42) then shared in a 78 run partnership, but the South Africans then suffered a mini-collapse and found themselves at 203/8.

Tail-ender Dale Steyn managed to help Prince to his hundred, but when the centurion edged Sidebottom to the wicket-keeper, South Africa's hopes of avoiding the follow-on were gone.

The visitors were all out 247 and Michael Vaughan had no hesitation in asking them to follow-on. Smith and McKenzie survived to lead South Africa to 13/0 at the of the day's play.
