South Africa's Patel unveiled as new ICC chief president

Imtiaz Patel has been confirmed as the next chief executive of the International Cricket Council (ICC) after beating off a host of likely candidates to the position.

The South African will take on his new role once the current chief executive, Australia's Malcolm Speed, steps down in June and already the announcement has been welcomed by his peers.

In a statement, David Morgan, the ICC's president-elect, commented: "There was an absolute consensus on his choice."

"He was among the six candidates shortlisted for the job by the ICC executive board from a list of 15 chosen by our consultants.

"We still have to negotiate the terms and conditions of the contract with Mr Imtiaz. The initial contract will be for a term of three year."

Among those who had been tipped for the post was the former head of cricket in India Inderjit Singh Bindra, though Patel's significant experience was believed to be a significant factor in the board's decision.

Ali Bacher, who was United Cricket Board of South Africa chief executive when Patel joined the body, noted: "He is steeped in cricket, and he is passionate about the game.

"He has energy and enthusiasm for cricket, and he comes with no cricket baggage - he comes in fresh."
