Surrey sign Pakistan all-rounder Razzaq
12/06/2008
Pakistan all-rounder Abdul Razzaq has signed a short-term contract with the Surrey Brown Caps to play in their Twenty20 Cup campaign this season.
The 28-year-old, who has had previous stints in English cricket with Middlesex and Worcestershire, will make his debut for the club against the Kent Spitfires at the Oval on Friday evening.
Razzaq replaces the club's current overseas player Matthew Nicholson for the three-week Twenty20 Cup period which runs until the end of the month.
Surrey cricket manager Alan Butcher said: "In this form of the game we need a world-class all-rounder in our ranks to give the side a better balance.
"Abdul Razzaq is a player who can either go in at the top of the order and smack it, or do the same later in the game.
"He's also got a decent one-day bowling record so will hopefully give us the boost that we need."
Butcher added it was "unfortunate" that Nicholson would be unable to play in the Twenty20 Cup, especially as his recent form with the bat has been much improved.
"Although he's said himself that perhaps he can't supply the really dynamic hitting that Razzaq is renowned for," Butcher concluded.
Razzaq's strike rate of 150 makes him an excellent and explosive addition to the batting lineup of the Surrey side, who won the inaugural Twenty20 Cup in 2003.
