T20 Cricket Champions League cancelled
27/11/2008
The organisers of the inaugural Twenty20 Cricket Champions League, which was due to begin in Mumbai next week, has been postponed.
Following terrorist attacks in the Indian city last night, which killed more than 100 people, and the ongoing hostage situations unfolding at a series of local luxury hotels, the authorities have chosen not to go ahead with the tournament.
"As a reaction to recent events, Champions League T20 has been postponed," a statement from the organisers said.
"New dates to be announced, as and when available."
League chairman Lalit Modi added: "We very strongly condemn this dastardly and heinous criminal act of a few which has resulted in the loss of precious lives and injury to hundreds.
"We offer our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and we are with them in their hour of grief."
England's only representatives in the competition, Middlesex Crusaders, postponed their scheduled flight to India this morning because of the news, and now look unlikely to travel at all this week.
No announcement has yet been made regarding South Africa's Pretoria Titans - Middlesex's first opponents in the group stage of the competition - although they are now not expected to make the trip to the subcontinent.
