Taylor century puts Kiwis in control against England
24/05/2008
England trail New Zealand by 339 runs at tea on day two of the second Test at Old Trafford.
Peter Moores' side are on 42-1 after 15 overs with Alastair Cook dismissed for 19.
Earlier the Kiwis were bowled out for an imposing 381 with Ross Taylor making an unbeaten 154, the highest score by a New Zealander at Old Trafford.
Starting the day on 204-4, the Kiwis dominated the England bowlers with Monty Panesar and James Anderson proving expensive.
But England were given a huge slice of luck after the tourists lost two wickets with suicidal run outs.
First, Alastair Cook at point dismissed Oram (38) with a fine throw after a lazy run for a single by the all-rounder.
Five minutes later, skipper Daniel Vettori was sent back to the pavilion after failing to ground his bat when scampering for a second.
That brought Kyle Mills to the crease, and the bowler smashed a swashbuckling 57 off 78 balls, which included seven boundaries.
Mills, who made his first Test half-century, was eventually bowled by Anderson to leave New Zealand on 339-7.
It was then announced that Brian Flynn was unable to resume his innings after having two teeth removed when he was whacked by a bouncer from Anderson yesterday.
Taylor brought up the second Test century of his career, to bounce back from his nightmare display at Lords last week.
The 24-year-old continued to smash the England bowlers all over Old Trafford, bringing up his 150 with a towering six off Sidebottom.
In the next over, the Kiwis' innings came to an end when Anderson dismissed Chris Martin for a duck after removing his off stump.
In reply, the home side made a solid start with openers Andrew Strauss and Cook putting England on 33-0 after nine overs.
Cook was then given out for 19 after an inswinging delivery from Iain O'Brien struck him on the pad, bringing skipper Michael Vaughan to the crease.
Vaughan is on four off 19 balls while Strauss moved on to 17 at tea.
