Vaughan admits England got selection wrong
21/07/2008
Michael Vaughan has vowed to review the policy of selecting five bowlers after South Africa defeated England by 10-wickets at Headingley.
"In hindsight, it looks like we got [the selection] wrong," Vaughan said.
"I will discuss with the selectors this week where we feel we can improve and which areas we can strengthen."
South Africa eased their way to victory with a day to spare, needing only nine runs from their second innings to take a 1-0 lead in the series.
"It is not the best performance we have given but they put us under a lot of pressure, especially on day one," Vaughan said.
"Restricting us to 203 in our first innings was not a par score on that kind of wicket.
"They went out and batted beautifully. We threw everything at them but Ashwell Prince and AB de Villiers played two tremendous knocks.
"Having a 300 deficit was always going to be difficult. We showed a bit of character today but we have not got a guy to 100 in the match.
"Full credit to South Africa, they deserved the win."
Despite being 1-0 down after two tests, Vaughan insists that England can still win the four-test series.
"We were in a similar position in New Zealand, 1-0 down with two to play. We've got to come back with the same kind of performances we did over there," he said.
"This is a team that contains a lot of character, we've come back from 1-0 down before and we can do it again."
