Vaughan calls for England improvement
09/06/2008
Captain Michael Vaughan has called on England to improve as a team when they face South Africa in the second home Test series of the summer.
Speaking after witnessing his side record an innings victory over New Zealand, which wrapped up a 2-0 win in the series, Vaughan said the Proteas would provide a very different examination.
The Black Caps were comfortably brushed aside at Trent Bridge as impressive performances from seam bowlers Ryan Sidebottom and James Anderson ripped through the tourists' batting lineup.
And despite lauding the team's performances in the field in Nottingham, and at the previous Test at Old Trafford, Vaughan said he does not expect a similarly easy ride in July and August.
"I never envisaged winning by an innings but full credit to the way we've played our cricket," Vaughan said.
"The catching was very good in this game and the win here suggests we have got better as the series has gone on.
"We also know there are areas to improve and the South Africa series, as I have said all summer, will be the ultimate test of where we are at as a Test team."
The main concern for England is likely to be their misfiring batting order, which has not scored more than 400 in an innings this year.
