Vaughan injury concern casts doubt over tour selection
21/09/2008
Michael Vaughan's hopes of securing a place on England's tour of India at the end of the year have taken a blow after he sustained an injury playing for Yorkshire.
Vaughan was recently awarded one of the England and Wales Cricket Board's central contracts for the next 12 months, suggesting he was in the thoughts of the selectors for the up-coming tour.
However, since retiring from the England captaincy Vaughan has continued to struggle for form.
Vaughan has scored just 10, 0, 19 and 14 in four first-class innings since he left the England side. Previously he had averaged just eight in the series against South Africa.
Yorkshire coach Martin Moxon revealed Vaughan sustained a side injury while bowling for Yorkshire against Somerset in their County Championship match yesterday.
The Tykes have one more game left against Sussex which begins on Wednesday and Moxon admits Vaughan is a doubt for the match.
Moxon said: "It's a concern and obviously we will check him out over the next couple of days. He is obviously a doubt.
"He has worked really hard trying to get runs for us and I thought on Thursday this was going to be the game, because he looked so good whilst he was in.
"But we will just have to wait and see what Monday brings and what the state of his fitness is."
Vaughan faces competition from players such as Owais Shah and Ravi Bopara for a place in the Test side and their inclusion in the one-day series which precedes the Tests could give them the edge against the Yorkshireman.
