Four injured in explosion in Wigan
30/11/2008
Four people have suffered injuries in an explosion that led to the collapse of two flats in Wigan.
Two council-owned flats in Blake Close, Worsley Mesnes, collapsed and burst into flames yesterday evening after the explosion.
Greater Manchester police said they were investigating the cause of the incident, adding that two people had been admitted to hospital with serious burns injuries. They are both in a critical condition.
Another two people were receiving treatment for smoke inhalation while four others had been taken to Wigan Royal Infirmary after they suffered asthma, angina and panic attacks from the accident.
A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: "We were called to a three-storey block of flats and found the top two flats had concertinaed into the ground floor flat...
"A full search of the block of flats will be carried out by specialist search teams in the next few hours. The cause of the explosion is currently under investigation."
Gas and electricity supplies to the building have been isolated.
