Inquiry launched into cathedral shooting
01/12/2008
An investigation has been launched after police shot a man outside Guildford cathedral on Sunday.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) confirmed an inquiry had been launched after the fatal shooting yesterday afternoon.
A spokeswoman for the IPCC said: "My condolences to the dead man's family and friends.
"I would like to reassure the man's family, the public and the police officers that the IPCC investigation will be thorough, proportionate and timely."
Reports suggest the dead man was from the local area, with local residents claiming they heard a police helicopter hovering overhead and saw Surrey police officers arrive at the scene.
The area around the cathedral continues to be cordoned off this morning as officers gather forensic evidence.
