£1million pledged for Titian's Diana and Actaeon
14/10/2008
A £1 million donation to help keep Titan's Diana and Actaeon on public view has been announced.
The grant, the first to be publicly pledged, is the largest single donation towards saving an individual work by the Art Fund charity in its 105-year history.
The painting, which is part of the Brigdewater collection, is being offered to the National Galleries of Scotland and the National Gallery in London for £50 million.
The galleries have been given until December 31st to raise the money.
Director of London's National Gallery, Nicholas Penny, said he was "deeply grateful" for the donation.
The charity's director, David Barrie, added: "Today we have put our money on the table.
"Now others must come together if this extraordinarily important painting is to be kept where it belongs."
