Author Fowles dies aged 79
07/11/2005
Author John Fowles has died aged 79 after a lengthy illness, his publisher has confirmed.
Essex-born Fowles, author of bestsellers such as The French Lieutenant's Woman, The Magus and The Collector, died on Saturday leaving a legacy rich in innovative experimentations with the narrative form.
The Magus, in particular, became a cult classic after its publication, while The Collector, his first novel, was also extremely popular.
But it is The French Lieutenant's Woman which really earned Fowles his reputation, due to its adaptation as a successful film starring Meryl Streep and Jeremy Irons.
Fowles was still writing into his old age, releasing a set of essays in 1998. The first comprehensive biography of his life was published last year.
