Campbell admits assault charge
16/01/2007
Naomi Campbell has pleaded guilty to throwing a mobile phone at her housekeeper's head.
The 36-year-old supermodel was arrested in March last year after her maid, Ana Scolavino, claimed that she suffered a cut to the head during a row over a pair of jeans.
Appearing at a New York court today, the British-born model was sentenced to five days community service for third-degree assault after her lawyers agreed a plea bargain.
She was also ordered to attend anger-management classes and pay a fine of $363 (£185).
Lawyers for the model told the judge that she was keen to avoid the humiliating experience of Boy George, who was ordered to clean streets in New York as part of his punishment for reporting a false burglary in 2005.
The task became a media scrum however and he completed his community service away from prying lenses inside the sanitation department's grounds.
David Breitbart told reporters that the judge hearing the case had accepted that it would be unsuitable for his client to serve the community service in public and had recommended she did it inside instead.
Mr Breitbart added that Ms Campbell was "sorry" that the throwing of the phone caused the maid pain but maintains that it was an accident.
