Sony postpones release of game over Koran phrases

20/10/2008

Sony has postponed the global release of a new video game due to concerns it may offend Muslims.

Copies of the much-anticipated LittleBigPlanet are currently being recalled worldwide after it was discovered that one of the background tracks used in the game contained two phrases from the Koran.

The entertainment company has apologised for any offence caused and announced that a modified version of the game will be released next month.

A statement on the game's website said: "We're sure that most of you have heard by now that one of the background music tracks that was licensed from a record label for use in the game contains two expressions that can be found in the Koran.

"We have taken immediate action to rectify this and we sincerely apologise for any offence this may have caused."

LittleBigPlanet is described as a game about making computer games. Players can build playground levels and swap them with other games on the PlayStation Network.

It is not the first time that one of Sony's games has been caught up in religious controversy.

Eighteen months ago, the company apologised about a scene from Resistance: Fall of Man involving a virtual Manchester Cathedral.ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18833558-ADNFCR
