Worrying Brits bothered by money
18/09/2007
Money troubles bother young Britons more than other prominent concerns like family or health, a survey suggests.
Research from pollsters GfK Nop reveals that over half of 16- to 24-year-olds are bothered by money more than anything else.
Nearly one-third of this age bracket say they worry about financial issues 'all' or 'most' of the time, in line with figures for the whole UK population on all issues.
Advice agencies are concerned that only one in ten are likely to approach them for help about their situation, compared to one in four for the UK as a whole.
"This poll adds to a growing body of evidence that young people access the expert advice they desperately need all too infrequently," Youth Access director Barbara Rayment commented.
"Unresolved social welfare problems such as debt and homelessness can have a devastating impact on individual young people's health and wellbeing, as well as having major knock-on effects for wider society and public spending."
The survey, which questioned 2,050 people aged 16 and over, found that nearly one in three people worry about their problems 'all' or 'most' of the time.
Those in the Midlands prioritised money as their main headache, unlike in the north and south of England where family and health came top.
Surprisingly, Greater London had the lowest percentage of people likely to have worries. East Anglians were the most likely to be concerned.
