06/02/2008
Manchester's Christie Hospital is to receive a £35 million injection to fund a significant expansion project, it has emerged.
The development of a new patient treatment centre could see the institution become a world renowned authority on cancer treatment research.
An early trials unit will be incorporated into the new centre and is set to include new chemotherapy provision, as well as facilitating a doubling of the number of trials carried out at the hospital.
Caroline Shaw, chief executive of the Christie Hospital, said: "We are going through one of the most significant times in the proud history of the Christie Hospital as we work to bring more world class cancer facilities to local people."
An increase in the number of chemotherapy treatments from 30,000 to 36,000 a year will be enabled by the enhancement.
Construction on the new centre is to begin this year and is scheduled for completion in 2010.
As one of the leading cancer centres in Europe, Christie treats about 40,000 patients each year.
