Alien Nation to hit Manchester Art Gallery
24/01/2007
Manchester Art Gallery is to play host to an exhibition which aims to unite aspects of science-fiction and race with contemporary art techniques.
From Saturday March 17th until Monday May 7th, visitors to the gallery may gain free entry to the exhibition, said to be the first project of its kind.
A variety of techniques are represented, from film and photography to sculpture and three-dimensional painting.
In all, 12 artists have contributed to the display with their own interpretations of "otherness" and "difference".
Manchester Art Gallery said: "Mingling fact and fiction, science and art, Alien Nation will also show a collection of original sci-fi film posters from the 1950s to present day."
These, it explains, are provided courtesy of the Reel Poster Gallery and are to be accompanied by extracts from science-fiction movies.
The project is delivered through a joint partnership between the Institute of Contemporary Arts and the Institute of International Visual Arts.
A conservation project is to be launched at the same time as Alien Nation to chronicle the restoration of William Etty's The Sirens and Ulysses, one of the gallery's largest pictures.
