Altrincham Metrolink line reopens
29/08/2007
The Altrincham to Manchester Metrolink line has reopened following weeks of repair work.
Sections of worn-out track have been replaced, platforms have been refurbished and ticket machines are now upgraded.
During the works, nearly 30 extra buses were laid on every hour, while extra carriages were introduced on a number of Altrincham to Manchester trains.
"Some of the track we've replaced was more than 50 years old and passengers will notice smoother, quieter and more reliable journeys when the trams run again," said Michael Renshaw, a spokesperson for the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive (GMPTE).
Passengers who hold season tickets will still be able to enjoy reduced rates while remaining work is carried out.
Reductions will remain in place on weekly, monthly and quarterly tickets bought on or before September 15th.
"That means that passengers who buy a quarterly ticket in September could benefit from cheaper travel on Metrolink until mid-December," Mr Renshaw added.
Maintenance work is still being carried out on the Manchester Victoria to Bury line, which is expected to reopen to the public in mid-September.
According to the GMPTE, passengers make 55,000 journeys on Metrolink every day, which amounts to nearly 20 million a year.
