An event in musical history
30/05/2006
A Manchester Central Library event will "transport people back" to "that pivotal moment in Manchester where popular music changed forever", according to councillor Mark Hackett.
In an event that Mr Hackett predicts will be "enjoyable", punk writers and commentators will be reading from their recently published and soon to be released books.
John Robb, Clinton Heylin, Mick Middles and Lindsay Reade will all present readings at the event that takes place on Friday June 9th.
Councillor Mark Hackett, executive member for culture and leisure at Manchester City Council, said: "Manchester is known for its pioneering spirit, its creativity, its industrial heritage and
its music."
Among the topics discussed at the event will be a Sex Pistols gig, which took place at the Lesser Free Trade Hall in 1976.
Future members of Joy Division, the Smiths and the Buzzcocks were in the audience that night, seemingly encouraged to write music by what they saw.
Mr Hackett added: "Central Library holds the booking diaries for the Free Trade Hall and they are valuable social documents."
This moment in musical history is also documented in the Manchester music film, 24 Hour Party People, which stars Steve Coogan.
