BBC confirms extra jobs at Salford Quays
16/01/2008
Salford, Manchester and the entire north of England look set to become a "world-class centre of media innovation and technology", the BBC's chief operating officer has said.
Speaking at an event in Huddersfield, Caroline Thompson confirmed that the BBC is moving a "significant number of additional staff" to the new mediacity:uk site in west Manchester.
The extra jobs are in BBC News, including journalists working at BBC Radio 5 Live, as well as the Future Media & Technology division.
Ms Thompson said a stronger BBC presence will strengthen Salford Quays' status as a "true network centre".
"[This is] part of the BBC's drive to become less London-centric and more deeply rooted in the whole of the UK," she stated.
The total number of BBC jobs moving from London to Salford will increase from the expected 1,500 to more than 1,620 - an increase of nearly ten per cent.
It has been estimated that the creation of mediacity:uk will generate £1.5 billion for the regional economy and provide employment opportunities for 15,500 people.
