BBC move to Salford approved by governors
15/12/2006
Anthony Salz, the acting chairman of the BBC board of governors, has said that the BBC has been "too London-centric for too long".
Governors have now approved plans to move some of the broadcaster's departments, including Five Live and sport, to Greater Manchester.
However, Mr Salz stressed that the move to Salford's Media City at the quays still depends on whether the license fee is increased, the BBC has reported.
"Licence fee payers most definitely want a BBC that reflects and brings wider benefits to all parts of the UK, but not at any price," he said.
"More detailed work will be needed during 2007 before decisions can be taken that will provide final robust plans."
BBC director general Mark Thompson was recently criticised for saying that the move to Salford could be abandoned if an inflation-busting license fee rise is not approved.
Despite this, Felicity Goodey, the chief executive of Salford's media city project, told local newspaper the Salford Advertiser that she was adamant the BBC move would go ahead.
