BBC move to Salford gets the go-ahead
01/06/2007
The transfer of several BBC departments to Greater Manchester has been given the green light following an agreement between the BBC Trust and Peel Holdings.
Both parties have agreed terms regarding the broadcaster's occupancy of Salford Quays' new mediacity:uk development.
It means that building work can now go ahead in time for the 2011 relocation of five departments, including BBC Sport and Five Live.
Some 1,500 London-based posts will relocate to Salford and 800 staff from the corporation's Manchester Oxford Road site are expected to move to the quays.
"I'm delighted that the BBC's vision for its expanded presence in the north of England is now firmly on the road to reality," said BBC director general Mark Thompson.
"The modern, multimedia broadcast and production centre in Salford will shift the BBC's centre of gravity away from London, bringing a range of creative benefits to us and, I hope, helping us to better reflect and represent the whole of the UK."
The BBC will move to three buildings situated near The Lowry and the Imperial War Museum North as part of the first phase of the 200-acre mediacity:uk development.
