BBC relocation to Salford 'a step closer'
18/01/2007
The BBC's partial move to Greater Manchester came a step closer today following news that the television licence fee is to rise, although not above inflation.
One of the original conditions made by the BBC of moving several of its departments to Salford Quays was an inflation-busting licence fee hike. However, the broadcaster has had to settle for a reduced deal.
It means that Radio Five Live, BBC Sport and the BBC's children's channels are all likely to relocate to Salford's proposed MediaCity within the next few years.
In recent months, BBC director general Mark Thompson has come under fire for saying that the move to the north-west might be abandoned if an above-inflation rise was not approved.
According to the government, the licence fee will rise three per cent over 2007 and 2008, with annual increases of two per cent until 2011.
Culture secretary Tessa Jowell said: "This is a vital opportunity for the BBC to widen its geographical spread and make better use of the creativity and talent that exists across the UK with huge knock-on benefits for the regional economy."
