Big Lottery to examine Irwell City Park bid
13/07/2007
Irwell City Park, a proposed waterside regeneration scheme for Greater Manchester, will be scrutinised by the Big Lottery Fund, it has been announced.
Plans to revitalise the River Irwell and create an 8 km urban park in central Salford, Manchester and Trafford will be examined by the Lottery in August before an answer is given in November.
The project, which is driven by a partnership between the councils for Salford, Manchester and Trafford, as well as the Central Salford Urban Regeneration Company, is one of 23 proposals that the Big Lottery Fund will consider.
Commenting on the plans, Chris Oglesby, chief executive of property giant Bruntwood, said that Irwell City Park will be an "incredible catalyst" for generating additional investment.
"The three local authorities and partnership organisations have ensured that [sustainability] is a key priority in ensuring this fantastic amenity is available for all to benefit in the city-region," he added.
Irwell City Park chiefs believe the scheme, which also involves the creation of "stunning architecture", walkways and cycleways, will return the river to the heart of the community.
